Equipment for sale in Dallas

I have two t-shirt machines and a flash dryer for sale.

One of them is a 2-station, 6-color, the other is a 1-station, 6-color.

I've been storing them for several years and have decided, as much as I want to, I'm not going to have the time to use them. Make me an offer.

Printing positives in Vellum at home

Ok so I'm going to be working from home and I need to figure out the best way to make quick cheap positives at home. I have a couple regular HP Deskjet printers and can print on clear but only up to 8.5in X 11in. I have a shop that prints blueprints not too far way but I have to send the file, wait for them to output on vellum, and drive over to pick them up and hope I sent the files right and of course pay for them. So I'm looking for a home desktop printer that is affordable, prints nice and dark on vellum or clear acetate and prints larger than 8.5X11. Most designs I do will be about 13in X 15in. But I'm willing to work with an 11x17 printer. Any suggestions?

home exposure light source?

Hey, I'm having a horrible time exposing my screens at home. My main question is what light source/bulb to use. I tried a video/film flood that I got at a camera suply store when I got my safe light and that didn't work. What light source do you guys use or have heard used.

I must say I thought this would be the easiest part.

i have this main problem with my screenprints.. i do my own screens and i use IKEA fabrics and it works pretty well, the only problem is that i fix them on wood with a clipshooter (if you don't get what im saying click: http://images.google.it/images?hl=it&q=sparapunti&btnG=Cerca+immagini&gbv=2).. the problem is it's not super firm, and by the time i pass the ink, the fabric moves and the final design comes out sloopy and unprecise.. do you have any advice on fixing the fabric super firm?? a link or something? thanks!

Old screens

Hi all,

I got some old but still very useable (i think) screens from a local screenprint shop. They have the images and the photo-emulsion stuff still on them.

My question is: is it possible to get old photo-emulsion off the screens - or are the old screens pooched?

Onto question #2, which I'm hoping is part of the answer to Q #1:

Does anyone know of a good source for photo-emulsion remover? I live in the NW (Victoria, BC) .

Ps: I can't seem to upload any images to the this tribe so please take a look at my profile pics for the latest screen I did. It was a one a day rush affair and the results were pretty good.

Thanks. Cheers. Happy labour day.

I'm looking for advice on what type of paper to use for screen printing street posters. I need paper that can won't warp or ripple too much from the moisture content of the ink. Budget is also a concern as well, so something affordable is a must. Thanks!

Psychedelic Fades

okay, I'm gonna crosspost this, I hope that's kosher...

what I am trying to figure out is how to do that psychedelic looking screenprint where one color fades into another in a series of colors... here's a really bad example of what I'm talking about because I couldn't find a picture of what I'm really going for:

http://www.urbanoutfitters.com/shopping/product/detailmain.jsp?itemID=28788&itemType=PRODUCT&iMainCat=10&iSubCat=25&iProductID=28788

bad because they only fade at the top and there are only two colors (and I don't like the design :) but you get the picture... I am trying to figure out how the heck you do this because it's not an abrupt change in color that you would get from blocking different parts of the screen (or making multiple screens)... my girlfriend fell in love with a sweatshirt that is no longer available so I want to make a cooler, more personalized one for her with the same effect, as her birthday is the 20th. I am using your basic speedball kit and understand the basics, color seperation and all that and feel pretty confident and proud of the stuff I've already done but I can't for the life of me in my head figure out how you would get that multiple color fade... I have plenty of blank screens to burn and ink.

actually here are a few more examples of kinda what I'm talking about:

http://www.karmaloop.com/products.asp?ProductID=19929&VendorCode=TAN
http://www.karmaloop.com/products.asp?ProductID=19059&VendorCode=HAR
http://www.karmaloop.com/products.asp?ProductID=23536&VendorCode=IMA

(the last two are probably the closest to what I'm going for)

any ideas?

I'm a complete novice at this and every time I go to use a screen I've burned (two time to be exact) the ink either doesn't pass through at all or I get a partial print. Is this because I've overexposed it or I didn't wash it out enough( I use a garden hose)? I've tried varying the exposure times and all. What causes this? I'm like frantic thinking I need to take an IQ test to prove that I'm not as dumb as this! Thanks, Ryan.

speedball 110 mesh, coated with diazo photo emulsion, exposed for 5 minutes under a 1000W halogen lamp, through an acetate transparency from an inkjet printer. i wash the emulsion out and i can see the pattern i've exposed - but when i try to take a print, ink just goes through the whole screen. what am i doing wrong? please please help.

Need seps? i can do them for you. i have 6+ years doing separations for screen printing, and can turn most jobs around in a day. more high-end stuff (up to 12 colors) will take 2 or 3 days, depending on my schedule.

My rate is $60 per hour, with a half hour minimum. Send me your art and I'll give you the cost before I start. Separations take roughly 1/2 hour per color. Some of the simpler stuff can be done faster than that, so the cost may be cheaper than expected.

if you need film positives printed out, i can do those too.

Does anyone know where I can buy quality plain shirts in bulk in Canada for a reasonable price? Everytime I look for bulk shirts, all I can find is American stuff. There must be a supplier in Canada. I'd really like to avoid paying customs fees and other crap. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks :)

Greetings.
A circle of friends with some silkscreen equipment is setting up a cooperative operation here in southeast.
We are currently setting up our darkroom and exposure unit. We are wondering if someone with some experience with screenburning, some skills and tips, could help us get started. The foothills of the learning curve are proving to be arduous. Perhaps in exchange for access to our exposure unit and darkroom, we could get together for some technical advice and a leg up?

My experience with the Speedball pink/red emulsion is that it is solidifying in a way that is not washing out even with pressure-washer and solvent. Has anyone else had this experience of impenetrably stuck emulsion?

Also....i washed out a screen that had blue emulsion on it and it dissolved right away with little effort.
is the blue emulsion just easier to work with or am i just missing something with the red?

HI, I'm very new to screen printing. I am curently using PVA glue rather than emulsion to make my screens which works just fine but it washes out as soon as it sees water. Is there another material i can use that has a longer lasting time than PVA but is cheaper than Emulsion? Any help would be greatly apreciated. It doesn't really matter if it doesn't wash out as I'm making my own screens for cheap cheap cheap.

P.S. If you could avoid using brand names that'd be ace as i live in england and everything here has differn't names than stuff in the states.

Cheers, Dan.

There is a small group of us in Portland
in the process of forming a cooperative screening circle
wherein we are making some equipment accessible to those
who are interested in learning about, playing with and
contributing to a screen-shop.

We have many questions and much much to learn...
this has evolved out of people getting turned onto the wonderul medium that is silkscreening
and then working up from screening on the living room floor
to finally acquiring some equipment.
I appreciate in advance any guidance
or tips we can exchange with this tribe.
Cheers!

SO!
i need to make a large screen for a project. However. i have used a few methods of screen creation (photo emulsion, StaSharp, stencil, ect) but none of the methods i'm familiar with are good for what i'm trying to do. i cannot get a transparency large enough without much effort and expense on my part. neither is hand cutting an option because the complexity of the design will take too long to cut. and i being inherently lazy, would like to find the easiest way to do it. i have a large format b&w xerox print on 20# bond paper (white). But how to transfer it to my screen? any ideas?

i recently coated a few screens with a new quart of ULANO TZ DIAZO texile emulsion. the dry screens have a bright green color to them, and upon burning them i could see the film positive burnt into the emulsion as expected. once i tried to wash them out, the emulsion turned a dark purple color, but there was no breakdown of emulsion whatsoever. i figure i over exposed it, tried again with a shorter exposure time, and i got the same result. just for kicks, i took an UNEXPOSED screen to the sink and tried to spray the emulsion out, and again it turned purple, and there was no breakdown whatsoever.

if the screens were pre-exposed to light while drying, then why am i still able to see the burt image area in the screen?

has the emulsion somehow gone bad?

First, the ink prints really heavy in a lot of areas which got me thinking that maybe I need to thin it out? Or maybe I’m applying too much to the screen. Normally, how much ink are you supposed to apply to the screen before squeegeeing?

Also, when I lift the screen to inspect the tee the screen sticks to the shirt and distorts the image. I do not know what I'm doing wrong. Can someone please help? Thanks!

So I have now officially exposed my first screen! Not a total disaster, but a couple of things did go wrong. All in all a good experience! I've already figured out how to resolve the issues and am planning on removing the emulsion and starting over again in a couple of days.

I was really excited to meet someone who has done screen printing before, without him it would have been a total wash for sure! Cheers Jonathan!

Even though my screen didn't turn out I’m still really stoked on the whole experience and can't wait to get back at it. To anyone out there thinking about getting into screen printing...just do it, dive in head first, I promise you won't drown! Remember, you can always clean the screen and start over!

Cheers'
Jamaican Steve

P.S. Thanks to all of you in this tribe for your posts! I've learned almost all I know to this point from info on this Tribe or links from it!

Kinkos + Vegetable Oil = ?

Howdy,
I've recently been introduced to the vegetable oil method of creating transparencies. In the past i've only used standard and oversized inkjet trans. Before I start running tests I was curious if anyone out there has any experience with the process. I have two questions:

1) How would you rate the overall quality of the stencil? With proper exposure times will this method reproduce the image accurately?

2) Do vellum trans. differ in exposure time compared to a standard trans.? {Im using (2) 500W halogen work lamps}

Any help or insight is greatly appreciated!

Thanks,
Plutis Von Doodman

Opaque Film Positive Printing

Hey all. I'm having trouble getting a good opaque film positive printed. I can't seem to find a printer/copier in town that does true opaque black on transparencies. Was looking into buying an inkjet/laserjet/laser printer so I could do my own. Any recommendations? Or should I just be telling the copy shops to turn up the contrast?

Also, I've only done exposures so far using a regular lamp with a 500W Photoflood bulb (in my bathroom :), however, I scored a cheap great light table that has two 20W flourescent bulbs under clear glass. Will this be enough? Should the tubes have reflectors? Will the light be too uneven? Does anyone know exposure times for this type of setup? (the bulbs are about 7-8" from the glass.

Thanks so much to anyone who can help. I'm fairly new to screen printing and just found this tribe. Cheers

...I'm wondering just how dark of a place you need to store your screen in while the photoemulsion is drying? Does it have to be absolute darkness? A friend of mine suggested putting the screen in a black paper portfolio while drying to assure a absolute minimum amount of light exposure. Anyone use this method or have other methds they would suggest?

I try to be careful when i screenprint..but somehow after spending hours around those chemicals, I come away feling sorta woozy and not very good.
Anyone else ever notice this?

Does anyone know just how toxic emulsion fluid is.
I assumed that speedball diazo was less toxic than the old speedball...there are no warnings on the bottle..but the bottle does not say AP non-toxic either.

Anywhoo..I have tried to look up this info in the past to no avail..it could be that I am just extra sensitive..just wondering what other's takes on this are.

BTW...howdy..I am the moderator of the other screenprinting tribe at the end of the block..the D.i.Y. screenprinting tribe....just thought I'd pop in and check this one out..i hadn't realised I wasn't a member.

I am about to go over to my other tribe and lament on the horrible mistakes I made while working on my stupid project today.

For those in the PNW, do what you can to make it to Bumbershoot (http://www.bumbershoot.org) this Labor Day weekend to check out Flatstock 7 (http://www.flatstock.com). It is by far the best exhibition of screen printed goodness I've ever seen, and every year it gets bigger and better. There is such an amazing array of styles, techniques, and artists.... and it's all for sale! Over the past couple of years, Flatstock has become my "must see" art show for every year. I get giddy when it draws near, but I'm a print dork and I'm funny that way. Do yourself a favor and check it out if you can. Even if the music at Bumbershoot doesn't do much for you, Flatstock is easily worth the price of a day pass.

I'm looking to get myself two screens, at least 3ft x 3ft, but I'll unfortunately need them in about a week from now. Any idea where to being my shopping? I live in San Francisco but do have a car.

And in all honestly and humility, I don't quite know where to find screen printing resources in the bay area in general - what I have I either brought with me when I moved or bought at the nearest possible art supply store. Can anyone point me in the direction of a relatively good shop for screenprinting supplies in the bay area?

hi. im birthing this forum that focuses mostly on art and left politics.

its all fresh and new and waiting for instigator types to help shape the place. hardly anyone in there right now but it has a lot of potential. who ever gets involved at this point would be key in developing the character of the place.

you can put pictures and stuff in each post.

im still adding a forum or two more and working on the design of the place.

i would be honored by your presence. come check it out: http://p207.ezboard.com/btheemptyroom

... about this craft. I want to print some vinyl signs. I've burned the screen. Can I use Latex paint with some kind of thickner in it as my printing ink? Any ideas for making squeegies? I'm gonna need a 15 inch one.
Thanks for any tips and techniques.

photostenciling!

I took a beginning photographic silkscreening class last year and am trying to do it on my own now in my kitchen. The one thing I'm trying to do some research on is the photostencil emulsion. We used thin sheets of film (cut into pieces) and adhered that to our screens. All I can really find for purchase at the online art stores is the liquid emulsion stuff.

I don't mind trying the liquid emulsion stuff although it looks a wee bit harder to apply (and have it dry well). I have a tiny studio apt., so the film stencil appeals to me because it adheres quickly with water and a swipe of the squeegee, and I don't have to worry about it oozing downwards if I dry the screen vertically (which I have to because of space constraints).

I'm curious to see what you all are using for photostenciling...do you like the emulsion stuff all right, or do you use film, and if so, what brands and type can you recommend?

Thanks so much!!

I made these 35 books, blank on the inside, I screen printed a rough fleshy colored rectangle on the cover. The theme is s k i n. I have been doing mail art for some time now. I am mailing these books to artist around the world, they elaborate on them and send them back to me, I am working on finding a gallery to show the completed works, but combinding them all into one reproducable book would be ideal. This is the first time I have mailed out books, I have done postcards before and I have made several artist books, so I decided to combind my two endeavors. If you would like to participate, please email me your address.

Hi all,

I am going to improve my screenprinting set up at home from my speedball kit, and I was wondering if you have any brands/places to order from/work flows that work for you that you could share.
I just finished taking a screenprinting class, and the teacher didn't really have the technical side of things down, so for instance something happened to the emulsion on one of my screens, and then no image came out, and then, I tried 3 different solutions on it to try to remove the useless film emulsion. After a few minutes of letting this toxic chemical sit on my screen, it ate thru my screen! So, as you can see, we were having trouble doing even basic screen exposing and cleaning, let alone color registrations. So, I'd appreciate any inks, screens, screen cleaners, stencil film, papers, registration supplies, or books that you could recommend.

Thanks!

A
